In January 1999, the Desert Botanical Garden launched its first-ever capital improvements campaign, Growing a Legacy for Generations. As a result of the successful $17 million capital campaign, in March 2001, the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail was completed and debuted to the public just in time for a beautiful blooming season. A new admissions area, visitor services building and Garden Shop were open for business shortly after in October 2001. The culmination of the capital campaign came in Spring of 2002 when the Garden held its Grand Opening 2002 series to present the "new" Garden to the community. Family Saturday activities, a lecture series, teacher, member and donor receptions were designed to showcase the new Desert Studies Center with classrooms, a reception hall, library, herbarium, research labs and more. To help attract new audiences, the Garden also presented two special exhibits: a live Butterfly Pavilion and traveling sculpture exhibit. These capital improvements and related activities significantly enhance one of the world's largest and most diverse collections of cacti and succulent plants, including 139 rare, threatened and endangered species from the world's deserts. The Garden now welcomes more than 300,000 visitors annually.
