Dietary fiber and breast cancer

Source: www.InteliHealth.com, 3/8/04

5/31/2004 - A new study confirms many previous observations that women eating the most dietary fiber have the lowest rate of breast cancer. In a study of 11,000 initially healthy women in Sweden, 342 participants developed breast cancer. The amount of fiber in the diet was significantly protective against breast cancer, primarily after the age of 50; but, surprisingly, total fruit and vegetable consumption was not. The study appeared in the January 12, 2004, issue of the British Journal of Cancer (http://tinyurl.com/2pkx3).

Women getting more than 25 grams of fiber daily were the only ones to show a benefit. Eating high amounts of fat greatly weakened the protective effect of fiber. The results suggest a low risk of postmenopausal breast cancer is associated with high fiber and low-fat diets.
