AUNT HATTIE'S LOW CARB BREAD

GREAT TASTING AUNT HATTIE'S LOW CARB BREAD IS HERE!

AUNT HATTIE'S Low Carb 100% whole grain bread is a great choice for those who love bread but would like to lower their daily intake of carbohydrates.

On November 3, 2003, Holsum Bakery, Inc. announced a new addition to their AUNT HATTIE'S family of breads: AUNT HATTIE'S Low Carb 100% Whole Grain Wheat bread. Ed Eisele, President of Holsum Bakery, Inc. (Phoenix) commented, "With the growing popularity of reducing the intake of carbohydrates, be it for weight loss or for improved overall health, we are very excited to be the first in our marketing area to provide a great tasting reduced carb bread. The taste and freshness is remarkable, and stands unparalleled in all of the southwest!"

This bread is baked fresh in Phoenix, and quickly distributed throughout the southwest, which lends a "freshness factor" that has yet to be matched in reduced carbohydrate breads. AUNT HATTIE'S Low Carb 100% whole grain bread is also free of trans fats, a major concern of healthy eaters today.

Below are some facts about AUNT HATTIE'S Low Carb 100% whole grain bread, trans fats, and the reduction of carbohydrates in the diet.

THE APPEAL OF REDUCED CARBOHYDRATE DIETS
Low carb diets have gone in and out of the spotlight for many years now. These fad diets often claim that reducing the daily intake of dietary carbohydrates will result in rapid weight loss while allowing a large daily dose of fatty foods such as bacon and heavy cream. The appeal of these diets is that most Americans have been taught that old adage "Eat fat, get fat". Opening the door to these previously forbidden foods sounds wonderful for those who feel deprived of steak, cheese and other high fat foods.

THE TRUTH
The truth is that fat contains 9 calories per gram, carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, and protein also has 4 calories per gram. (The "calorie" is a measurement of energy contained in food.) Calories consumed in excess of what is used by the body are stored for later use.

At Holsum Bakery we believe that a balanced diet and regular exercise is the key to good overall health. Each slice of AUNT HATTIE'S Low Carb 100% whole grain bread has 50 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, ZERO trans fat, 2 grams of fiber and a total of 7 grams of carbohydrate. Consuming fewer carbohydrates (and therefore fewer calories) each day may contribute to your overall good health. However completely eliminating - or severely restricting - a food group is not necessarily the best choice for long term health or weight loss. A high protein and unusually high fat diet can lead to coronary heart disease, elevated serum cholesterol and other health problems.

The Wheat Foods Council reported on March 5, 2003, that "based on a recent Gallup survey of 1,000 primary grocery shoppers, 75 percent of Americans realize high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets may offer short-term results…". They also recognize that weight loss results from these diets are very difficult to maintain in the long-term. In fact, 70 percent of those polled understand that depriving themselves of foods rich in carbohydrates is not healthy.

HIGH-FIBRE DIET MAY LOWER DIABETES RISK

Low-carbohydrate diets have become increasingly popular. But some carbohydrates may play a role in preventing serious health conditions.

A recent study suggests that people who consume large amounts of certain fiber-rich foods--namely high-fiber carbohydrates--are less likely to develop conditions that increase the risk of diabetes.

The study, published in the February 2004 issue of Diabetes Care, looked at the eating habits of more than 2,800 men and women. The researchers found that those with a higher intake of fiber-rich cereals and whole grain breads were less likely to be resistant to insulin--a major factor in the development of type 2 diabetes (formerly called adult-onset or non-insulin-dependent diabetes). Eating other whole-grain foods and fiber-rich-fruits also decreased insulin resistance.

Participants with a higher intake of whole grains and cereal fiber were also less likely to develop metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of abnormalities of your body's metabolism--including high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, an increased waist size, a high triglyceride level and a low high-density lipoprotein "good" cholesterol level--that makes you more likely to develop diabetes and other conditions such as heart disease or stroke.

Mayo Clinic doctors recommend that people consume a balanced diet including a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
