Holsum Bakery of Phoenix Celebrates United Nations Day
On United Nations Day (October 24, 2003), Holsum Bakery associates will be celebrating in each of its facilities their work force diversity by displaying the flags of the 21 countries where many of their current work force were born, along with cake for everyone.
Edward Eisele, founder of Holsum Bakery Inc. and grandfather of the current bakery President, immigrated from Germany at the age of 18. His journey proved an inspiration for his legacy. He not only worked as a cook and baker during his trans-Atlantic trip, he held a similar post while crossing the country with a wagon train in the 1870's before becoming employed by another German immigrant baker, Mr. J. Heinson, owner of Phoenix Bakery.
Of the United Nations Day celebration, Ed Eisele said, "We are a land of immigrants, except of course for our Native American friends. At Holsum we thought it would be interesting to stop and think about the virtual mini-United Nations the bakery has formed. The Holsum family represents a wonderful blend cultures and countries, and we are very fortunate to have so many people from other places as a part of our team!"

United Nations Day was established by Presidential Proclamation to commemorate the establishment of the United Nations in 1945. The key objective of the United Nations is "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war". It has also been instrumental in coping with hunger, disease, illiteracy, and poverty around the world through it's various agencies like UNICEF (International Children's Emergency Fund), UNESCO (U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and WHO (World Health Organization). Today, societies have become so dependent on its international neighbors, the United Nations' charter is even more important in fostering international cooperation and understanding.
