Allergy Alert
The topic of Food Safety is of great concern to each of us. As consumers, institutional providers and manufacturers of foods we all want to be assured that the foods we eat are made from ingredients that are safe for us.
Portions of the population are known to have allergic reactions to certain foods or derivates of these foods. The US Government has mandated, by law, that a group of allergenic foods, known as the “Big 8”, be listed on any product that contains them. There are eight foods that account for 90% of all food-allergy reactions in the U.S.: cow’s milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts (for example, walnuts, pecans, almonds, and cashews), fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.
Holsum does not have any of the following in our products nor are they used in our production plants: Fish, Shellfish, peanuts and tree nuts.
Holsum does use milk, egg, soy and of course wheat in many of our products. We have implemented a packaging format that consists of special bolding of the words in the ingredient panels on every product that uses one of these allergenic foods or the derivative of the food.. You will find at the end of the ingredient panels on each product that we have also included the wording:
ALLERGY ALERT: IN BOLD LETTERS
CONTAINS : (ingredient causing reaction will be listed here)
This alert will list the common name of any “Big 8” allergen present in the product.
